About our Foundation for Hearing Research

For 55 years, Foundation for Hearing Research has transformed the lives of children who are deaf or hard of hearing, teaching them to listen, speak, and learn through:

• Proven spoken language and cognitive development curriculum
• Family-centered education
• Innovative technology

At the Foundation for Hearing Research, we know that

• Access to sound is not enough for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to acquire listening and spoken language (LSL)
• Early, specialized LSL services are required for children who are D/HH to listen, speak, and learn
• It’s all about language, the overlooked foundation of literacy and learning
• An estimated 90% of children who are D/HH do not have access to strong language services; 50% of children in the US who are D/HH finish high school with a fourth-grade level of literacy or below.

 
Foundation for Hearing Research's Programs
 

• Weingarten Children’s Center - School and clinic in Redwood City, California for children from birth through 6 years old, preparing them to succeed in mainstream classrooms by first grade.
• BabyTalk Teleintervention Program – Eight-year collaboration with Stanford University School of Medicine that enables parents and babies 0-3 located throughout California to receive services in English or Spanish from speech-language pathologists and deaf educators via the internet.
• TeachLSL™ - Listening and spoken language education, therapy, and parent coaching to children ages 3 - 5 and their families throughout California.
• Talk2Me™ – We are also preparing to deliver our proven cognitive curriculum via digital and mobile technology to thousands of families of children ages 0-3 who currently lack access to strong LSL services.

Graduates of our program are successful!

• 89% of our WCC Kindergarten graduates in 2020 entered mainstream education by first grade
• 81% of our alumni are enrolled in college or hold a bachelor’s degree or higher!
