Breanna's Guide to Yoga Mats

Finding the right mat for your practice

There are many eco-friendly mats (keep reading for those!), but Jade takes it to the next level by planting a tree for every mat sold. Their commitment to giving back to the earth is remarkable. Through their partnership with Trees for the Future, they have planted over two million trees and counting! Yeah! Go Jade! Their mats are just as remarkable. The Jade Harmony Mat is made of natural rubber tapped from rubber trees, which is a renewable resource. They have great traction and cushion while still providing stability for standing poses making it a great option for any kind of practice.

Other eco-friendly mats are Hugger Mugger’s Earth Element Mats, which are made of Thermoplastic Elastomer, a nontoxic, biodegradable, and recyclable material. There’s Hugger Mugger’s Para Rubber Mat made with a natural rubber that is sustainable, renewable, biodegradable and comes from non-Amazon sources. There’s Hugger Mugger’s Nature Collection Mat made from plant oil extractions. This one is also latex-free for those with latex allergies. And last but not least, there’s Manduka’s EKO Lite Mat made from biodegradable, responsibly sourced all-natural rubber.

You can put your eco-conscious mind to rest because we have a lot of great options to fit your needs.

Enlighten your inner peace with the Hugger Mugger’s Earth Element Mat. It’s our most comfortable, spongy mat that will provide maximum cushion for your meditation. It has an extra-soft texture and pairs well with Hugger Mugger’s Zafu Meditation Cushion or Standard Yoga Bolster for ultimate comfort during your meditation practice so you can tap into what’s most important: peace, love and happiness.

You’re the type of yogi who is looking for more out of your practice. You push yourself to achieve your head standing goals and need a mat that won’t hold you back. Enter Manduka’s PRO Mat. This high-density mat has a dot pattern on the bottom of it that will hold the mat in place and a textured top layer which will allow you to flow through each posture effortlessly while providing exceptional comfort and joint protection.

The closed-cell construction means it’s built to last a lifetime blocking out moisture and bacteria, so you can focus on improving your crow pose practice after practice and less on what could be growing in between the layers of your mat. For very sweaty flows, throw a Yogitoes towel on top for added absorption and grip. The PRO Mat will for sure take your practice to the next level.

For the wanderer at heart, the Jade Voyager Mat is the best choice. At 1/16” thick and 1.5 pounds, it folds up into the size of a yoga block making it easy to fit into a suitcase or backpack and take with you wherever your yogi toes may go. Like the Harmony, it’s also made of natural rubber tapped from rubber trees providing peace of mind that as you take your practice on the go you are doing so with an eco-friendly mat.

New to yoga? Not yet convinced that it’s for you? And don’t want to invest too much into it? No problem! Gaiam’s Premium 2-Color Mat is perfect to get you started. It’s 6mm thick providing excellent cushion, textured for non-slip performance and is latex and other harmful phthalates free. At $29.98, you can try yoga without the big expense. You may even surprise yourself and become a yogi for life!

With humility and grace, Namaste.
