We keep it green at the Basement
You may have noticed that our logo is green, but our green-ness goes much deeper than that! Each of our stores has collection bins for you to recycle those mystery items you're not sure what to do with, from energy bar wrappers (they get turned into bags!) to climbing ropes (they get turned into leashes for rescue pups!). In fact, we recently won an award for our recycling program! Specific recycling is listed on each store page.
But being green is about reducing wast too—that's why we introduced our refillable propane program! Basementeers who buy a refillable propane canister from us can refill it for free, forever. So far, we've saved nearly 11,000 canisters from landfills!
Tom came to us 5 years ago from Marmot Mountain Works with a wealth of industry and guitar experience. He's the ultimate outdoorsy type, having dabbled in everything from triathlons to rock climbing, sailing to division 1 volleyball (back in his college days). Born and raised in Southern California, his adventurous soul brought him through the Rockies and Hawaii before delivering him to us. Nowadays, his greatest adventures are family bike rides that end at his local Biergarten.
Stafflete Ian Ballentine
Ian is completely amazing. He's the Marketing Director for the company, yeah, but he's so much more than that. He's Sports Basement main source of energy and enthusiasm. In fact, we're pretty sure he powers the entire Berkeley store with just the force of his personality. He runs most of our large-scale events, like packet pickups, film screenings and pro athlete panels, and seem to be friends with basically every mover and shaker in the industry. And he's a powerhouse outside of work as well!
Ian's motto is "I LIVE HARD" (yes, in all caps) and if you meet him, you'll believe it. When he's not at work, he's pushing his body as hard as he can. You'll find him running (trail & road), riding (mountain & road), swimming and dabbling in cross-fit. Only a guy as active as Ian can "dabble" in CrossFit. Outside of the Basement, he's got quite the adventuresome spirit and travels with his wife quite a bit. What’s Ian's lie? He's definitely not a hardcore vegan. In fact, he's kind of a carnivore.
