20 Years of Sports Basement
We're celebrating our 20th anniversary as a store! So many things have changed since our first store opened in Mission Bay. We went from __ employees to over 600 and in a few days, we'll have gone from a quirky warehouse in Mission Bay to having 10 stores around the Bay Area. We're so proud of where we have come as a company and are incredibly thankful to you, our wonderful customers, for supporting us the whole way. We wouldn't be turning 20 today if it weren't for all of you. Check out a little bit of Sports Basement history and see how far we've come together.
November 27, 1998
We opened the Mission Bay store. It was our first official location and we were only open Friday-Sunday.
Since we were at the store working everyday, we decided to open 7 days a week.
This was one of the very first rides we partnered with Aids Life Cycle on. They're one of our OG beneficaries!
Team in Training are also one of our long-time beneficiaries as we partnered with them for the first time in 2001.
We closed up shop in Mission Bay and opened the doors to our Presidio store. The over 80,000 square foot store used to be a commissary. We still have the old food category signs up along with our funky mobiles.
Soon after, we acquired the Bryant Street store building and worked away to open that very same year. It used to be a textile factory, way back in the day and
We branched out into the South Bay for the first time opening up our Sunnyvale store at what used to be a Fry's Electronics (remember those?!) We kept the motherboard floor design as part of our aesthetic.
Then ventured into the East Bay and opened our first store in the region at Walnut Creek.
Campbell joined our line up and was the second store that we opened in the South Bay. The Pruneyard Shopping center finally let our quirky selves there.
Our Berkeley store opened in one of our funkiest store buildings: Iceland! We know that the community loved the ice rink and it was such an awesome building that we basically kept it as is (minus the actual ice)! We even remade the original signs from old photos and redesigned our logo to match the Iceland logo.
After a bumpy start, our newly formed ecommerce department launches sportsbasement.com.
One of our proudest achievements, our Basementeer program, was launched. Our first Basementeers started getting 10% off all of their purchases, and we started donating 10% of profits to their favorite charities. After our first year, we gave back to over 1,000 schools & charities.
We hosted our very first Basement Basement Sale at our Bryant Street store. 30 people were lined up at 6am and over 400 people were lined up by 7am!
We couldn't get enough of the East Bay and opened up our San Ramon location.
We finally found the perfect spot in the North Bay and opened our Santa Rosa store in July. A few months later, the Sonoma County Fires threatened our communities. Our Santa Rosa store provided first-responders with gear at-cost & a place to rest while our customers joined our efforts to collect donations and gift cards for victims. We are incredibly proud to be part of such a resilient and strong community.
We found the perfect place to call home in Novato! We've been wanting to bring a Sports Basement to lower Marin for so long and when we finally found a good spot we jumped on it immediately.
After sponsoring and participating in races for almost 20 years, we decided it was finally time we hosted our own. Our first annual Halloween 5K presented by Sports Basement raised over $100,000 for The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco!
Our 10th store in Redwood City will host its Grand Snowpening on December 1st. We got the keys to the place in July making it one of our quickest remodel jobs & store openings. We're making Sports Basement history!
