WHAT'S IT LIKE TO WORK AT SB?

Sure you love Sports Basement as a customer, but what is it like to work here? This quick video will show you that the staff experience is just as amazing as the customer experience.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

We're one big giant family and we all love the same stuff—getting outside as much as possible, staying healthy, and helping our customers do the same. No previous experience of any kind is required to apply - we'll teach you anything you'd like to know!

If you love talking about outdoor gear, this is the position for you! From introducing beginners to a new sport or hobby to trading insider tips with experts, you'll get to talk to a huge range of customers about the gear and adventures you love the most.

Bike mechanics and bike aficionados will find a home away from home in our bike shops. You’ll have the chance to get your hands dirty in the workshop and share your wealth of bike knowledge with our customers.

If you love helping get people onto the slopes, the campsites, or the bike paths, our rentals team will be the perfect fit for you. You’ll get hands-on work with camp, bike, and snow gear to help customers get outdoors. You’re often the first step on their journey to the outdoors and you’ll get ‘em started on the right foot!

Do you love decorating and organizing? Do you want to make the world a more inspiring place?  Then you’ll love being part of our small, energetic team working to display our products in an organized and creative way. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as seeing your beautiful displays being shopped on the sales floor.

Do you revel in a job well done? It's easy to see how much you've accomplished every day in our receiving team! They crank through projects like nobody’s business, and are the first to see the products that arrive in our stores as they get them unpacked and prepped for the sales floor. You’ll have a solid routine and become a lean, mean, receiving machine.

If you’re everyone’s party-planner and you're driven by helping others, then our marketing team is the perfect place for you! Our marketers work with schools, charities, and other organizations to plan awesome events that support the whole community. You’ll get to meet all kinds of incredible community members and be the life of the party.

If you’re looking to help out behind the scenes, join our corporate team. From crunching numbers to purchasing product to providing customer support, you’ll do so much more than answer emails.

After 20 years we’re still growing our stores and launching new businesses. We promote from within to lead these stores and new businesses.

We develop our next team of leaders through bi-annual development reviews which are tied to our profit-sharing bonus.

Our benefits and store locations make it so that staff can raise a family and move around the Bay no matter where life takes them.

It’s all been said before: We care about the customer, the community, the environment. These are common values by which most companies try to abide. What sets us apart is how we prioritize and execute these values every day.

Couches Before Profit
Taking valuable retail floor space and creating hang out areas. We want people to see SB as a “third place”, a community hub. In the U.K. they have pubs, in France it’s cafes. In the Bay Area we have SB!

Economical vs. Extravagant
Frugality is a good thing. In the beginning, we learned how to spend money wisely because we didn’t have any. We maintained this approach ever since.

Volunteer vs. Donate
We volunteer our people, space, and time to the community in addition to cutting a check. We think this approach is more helpful to the community and more rewarding for SB.

Proximity vs. Productivity
We can never distance ourselves from the customer. Consequently, we require that everyone work the floor. From the CEO on down, every staff member spends time on the floor merchandising product, ringing up customers, cleaning out dressing rooms, etc.

O.K. is not O.K.
At SB, we never settle. We strive to do things the best we can. We strive to exceed the customer’s and our own expectations every day.

Doers vs. Degrees
Anyone who is willing to work hard can succeed at SB; you don’t need a pedigree. Many of our leaders came from the sales floor.

Creativity Before Efficiency
We are a roll-up-your-sleeves, DIY, “why not reinvent the wheel” type of company. We construct our fixtures, signs, and stores from anything we can get our hands on. This may not be the most efficient way, but it's rewarding to use recycled items to build something yourself.

Autonomy Before Rules
The Mom-and-Pop style of our stores requires that our staff take ownership of projects. From our very first staffer, we have required that people work unsupervised with very little structure. We hire great people who use great judgment.

Yes! vs No
Customers are worth too much to say “no” to. We will find a way to “just say yes” and keep them coming back. Staff and managers are empowered to use their judgment to find a way to say “yes”.

Safety Before Speed
Nothing is more important than the safety of our staff and customers. Nothing. Being safe and doing things right the first time will always take precedence over getting things done fast.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

We are proud to work with some of the most talented and knowledgeable people in the outdoor industry. Sports Basement provides equal employment opportunities to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender, sexual-orientation, national origin, age, or disability.

We pride ourselves in working with and assembling a diverse staff that is representative of our Bay Area communities. We have a zero tolerance policy for discrimination of any kind and actively ensure all staff are safe from discrimination while at work.

We continually examine our recruitment practices and educate ourselves to ensure that all bias within hiring and promotional processes is identified and removed.
